Why the Second Floor Stays Hot: Cooling Two-Story Calgary Homes

We got a call from a homeowner in Tuscany last July. New AC installed the previous summer. Downstairs sitting at 21 degrees. Upstairs at 28. She had called the original installer twice already. Both times they checked the refrigerant, said the system was running fine, and left. It was running fine. The problem was the ductwork.

That gap — a properly sized system and a house that still won’t cool evenly — comes up more often in Calgary two-story homes than most homeowners expect. It’s a predictable problem. There’s also a predictable fix.

    Why the Temperature Gap Exists

Heat rises. That physics fact explains most of the upstairs problem in two-story homes, though it is only part of the story.

Calgary’s afternoon sun loads west and south-facing upper-floor walls directly through the hottest part of the day. Attic heat radiates down through ceiling insulation. Upper-floor windows in newer builds tend to run larger, adding more solar gain through the afternoon. The mechanical system fighting that load was almost certainly sized to an averaged load calculation across the whole house rather than modelling each floor’s exposure separately.

Ground floor stays at thermostat temperature. Upper floor fights its own battle.

Ductwork: Where the Problem Usually Lives

Most Calgary two-story home duct systems were designed primarily for heating. Warm air rises naturally, so a furnace-centric design routes supply to lower floors and lets physics carry heat upward. Cooling works the opposite direction. Cold air falls. Getting it to upper floors reliably requires adequate duct capacity and enough pressure to push air up the runs and out the registers.

Older duct systems in Calgary homes weren’t designed for that. Supply registers upstairs are undersized, the runs are long, and the main trunk divides flow between floors. The upper floor gets what’s left.

The symptom is what that Tuscany homeowner described. Main floor comfortable. Upstairs 6 to 8 degrees warmer. System runs most of the afternoon and still doesn’t close the gap.

Return Air: The Half People Forget About

Every litre of supply air pushing into a room has to come back through a return. In most Calgary homes, returns are concentrated on the main floor, typically one or two large grilles near the furnace.

Upstairs with no return, positive pressure builds in closed rooms. Air pushes in but can’t get out. The room goes slightly pressurized against the supply register, which cuts flow further. Add a hot attic above and direct afternoon sun on the walls beside the bed, and the room won’t cool no matter what the thermostat says.

Adding return air upstairs requires running duct through walls. It’s the fix most often skipped. It also delivers the biggest payoff of any single modification on a struggling two-story system.

    West Walls and Afternoon Sun

West-facing master bedrooms are the most common complaint. Homes in Nolan Hill, Tuscany, and Evanston often face north-south, which puts upper-floor bedrooms directly on the west wall. From about 2 p.m. to sunset, those walls absorb direct radiation. Interior drywall surface temperatures on a west-facing wall run 8 to 10 degrees above ambient by mid-afternoon.

Window coverings help. Thermal curtains on west-facing upper windows reduce solar gain meaningfully. That is not an HVAC fix, but it cuts the load the system is fighting.

    What Actually Works

Duct redesign is the most thorough solution. Opening walls and ceilings to resize runs and add properly located supply registers solves the problem at the source. It also costs the most.

Variable-speed air handlers push more static pressure than single-speed blowers. More pressure means more airflow reaching upper-floor registers. On a home with marginal upstairs duct capacity, the difference runs 2 to 4 degrees during peak afternoon hours.

Zoning systems split the home into independent temperature zones. An upper-floor thermostat runs the system harder upstairs when needed, independently of the main floor. Full zoning solves the problem properly and adds cost up front.

Damper balancing in existing ductwork restricts flow to zones that are already comfortable, redirecting capacity toward the upper floor. Lowest-cost option. Worth doing as a diagnostic step before committing to larger work.

Attic insulation improvements reduce radiant heat load on upper ceilings. Combined with air sealing around penetrations, it directly cuts the cooling load the HVAC has to handle.

The Tuscany call ended with a variable-speed blower upgrade and two return grilles added upstairs. Afternoon temperature gap dropped from 7 degrees to about 2. Calgary Air Heating and Cooling Ltd diagnoses two-story cooling problems across Calgary, Chestermere, Cochrane, and Okotoks. Worth calling before another summer of chasing a problem the previous contractor said was fine.
